A Life Well Lived

July 2, 2020 by Jennie

bench

We recently lost Sam Stahlman, a friend and inspiration to many.

Please join us in dedicating a memorial to his life and memory.

Sam Stahlman joined the Lions Club of Patchogue in 1958, sponsored by his good friend Lion Artie Fuccillo. Sam was born on April 11, 1925 and enlisted in the US Army at 17. He fought in the D-Day invasion, landing at Normandy in June 1944 and later in the Battle of Bastogne in Belgium in December 1944. Sam was wounded near the end of the war and received a Purple Heart, but his wounds did not put him on the sidelines, and he was back in combat in short order. Sam was twice awarded the Bronze Star, presented to a soldier for heroic service in a combat zone.  Sam’s unit also received the Presidential Commendation. Of all the honors and awards that Sam received, he was most proud of his Combat Infantryman Badge, awarded to all infantry men who served in a combat zone. Sam was and shall always be remembered as a genuine Hero. Sam will also be remembered as a local businessman, substitute teacher in the Patchogue-Medford School District as well as a volunteer coach for the high school varsity football team. He received many awards and honors for his service to our country and our community. Sam was named to the Veterans Hall of Fame in 2010 and to the Pat-Med Hall of Fame in 2018.

To honor Sammy, the Lions Club of Patchogue, in cooperation with the Village of Patchogue, plans to place a park bench and a plaque at the 9/11 Memorial Park at Maiden Lane and Cedar Ave. The bench and plaque will be placed near the bench and plaque honoring Sam’s son Eric Stahlman, who was killed on Sept. 11, 2001 in the World Trade Center terrorist attack. Patchogue’s 9/11 Memorial Park is a quiet place, right on the Great South Bay, designed for introspection and contemplation.

The Lions Club of Patchogue is seeking donations from anyone who may want to honor Sammy for any of the contributions that this great man made for his country and his community. The funds collected will be used for the Stahlman memorial, injured veterans, and other Lions Club of Patchogue charitable causes.

Make check payable to Lions Club of Patchogue.  Please put ‘Honor Sam Stahlman’ on the memo line.

Send to:

EFSP Phase 37 and CARES Act Application for New Agencies

May 19, 2020 by Jennie

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program is an Federal Program to provide families having difficulty purchasing food and paying rent and utilities.  Funding is provided to agencies that currently have a food or shelter program to distribute to families.  Additional information on the program can be found at: https://www.efsp.unitedway.org/efsp/website/index.cfm

EFSP allocations for the current period of funding (Phase 37) and CARES Act funding have recently been released.  Long Island has been allocated the following:

Nassau County:

Phase 37 $502,395

CARES $716,271

Suffolk County:

Phase 37 $593,110

CARES: $845, 605

This is great news for our region at a time when more and more Long Island families are struggling to put food on their tables and pay rent and utilities. This is a significant amount of money to get to families who are currently struggling.  In order to distribute these dollars, we are looking to bring on new agencies to the program and we thought of your agency.  Please let me know if your agency is interested or would like more information.

This month, HWCLI took over the administration of this program from United Way Long Island.  We at HWCLI have been working feverishly to transition the application process for new and returning applicants to an electronic application.  Given that we are all working remotely and do not have access to our offices, we wanted to make the application process as paperless as possible.  We have also created a place on our website to hold EFSP information including the applications.  We will add resources and information to this landing page on our website over the next few weeks.

Below is the link on our website to the application for new applicants.  I hope that you will consider completing the application and joining the program.

https://hwcli.com/actionalert/efsp-apply/

Applications will be due on May 22nd at 6pm.  If you need more time, please let me know.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, suggestions or ideas.  HWCLI is very excited to take on the administration of this program and looks forward to finding creative and new ways to bring resources to Long Island’s families!

Day Care Scholarships Available for Essential Worker Families

April 30, 2020 by Jennie

Dear Friend of EOC of Suffolk:

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m happy to inform you that the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk is now able to respond in a new and valuable way. We now have a special opportunity to assist many of our community’s heroic first responders and essential workers.

To ease the financial burdens pressing upon the families of these essential workers, and to help keep these courageous employees on the job, qualified parents may now obtain tuition scholarships to send their children to our Way to Grow Child Care/Learning Center, located at 655 Montauk Highway in the Swann Nursery Commons in East Patchogue.

Under Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, the State of New York allocated $30 million from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) to cover child care costs delivered by eligible providers like Way to Grow Child Care/Learning Center. To qualify, parents’ income level must be less than 300 percent of the federal poverty level – or $78,600 for a family of four. Child care costs will be paid up to market rate for each region statewide. The list of eligible essential workers can be found here.

At child care centers around the state, CARES funding is also being used to purchase supplies including masks, gloves, diapers, baby wipes, baby formula, and food. Locally, the scholarship program is being administered by the Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. in cooperation with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

Parents can apply for a tuition scholarship by completing this form. They will be notified by the Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. of their eligibility within 24 hours.

As one of the very few child care centers open for business in southern Brookhaven, this tuition scholarship initiative provides Way to Grow Child Care/Learning Center and EOC of Suffolk with a wonderful opportunity to help blunt the negative impacts of this dreadful pandemic – and to serve as a vital resource for this essential and life-sustaining workforce.

Way to Grow Child Care/Learning Center’s educational program – which serves a full demographic spectrum of young people – offers developmentally appropriate programs with specialized curriculum for a variety of ages. They are following full CDC recommended COVID-19 safety precautions.

Please spread the word. I ask every one of you to act now – and to use your various platforms and networks to bring this new program to the attention of the public as best as you can.

Stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Adrian Fassett

C.E.O.
