The fight against coronavirus is unlike any battle our county, state and country have ever faced. Our entire way of life flipped on its head seemingly overnight because of a pandemic that swept the globe. That’s why it’s critical we rise to meet this challenge not as Republicans, not as Democrats, but as Americans in a non-partisan manner to deliver for those who need it most.Â
Working with the White House and Suffolk County Executive, in just the last month alone, I’ve secured over 1.2 million pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Suffolk, including surgical masks, N95s masks, face coverings, gowns, and more.
In addition to desperately needed PPE, Suffolk County received $257 million in federal funding for coronavirus related expenses . As one of the country’s hotspots, this will go a long way in alleviating costs for local government, but there’s more we can do to drive desperately needed funding to our communities.
Going forward, we must continue to secure additional funding for local governments, which is why I secured expanded federal financing assistance for Suffolk County and am urging the federal government to pick up 100% of the tab for FEMA Disaster Aid.
For our local small businesses that have been greatly impacted by the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus, the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program funding has been replenished. These programs are about survival for these mom and pop shops, and we must ensure the businesses that need it most are receiving the help they need.
As we emerge from this outbreak of coronavirus stronger than ever, diagnostic testing, anti-body testing, treatment research and vaccine development continue to ramp up. One local example is Chembio Diagnostics, a US company based in Hauppauge, that received approval under FDA’s emergency authority for a 15-minute rapid result antibody test. As they focus on widespread production, these tests are being used at Stony Brook University for a clinical trial that will help determine the effectiveness of using the plasma of recovered coronavirus patients in treating current coronavirus patients.
