Upcoming Food Drive Donation Opportunity & NYS Child Care Assistance Links

April 30, 2020 by Jennie

Message from Police Officer Will Zieman:

We are proud to announce an upcoming collaboration with the Suffolk County Police Women’s Association. A county-wide food donation drive is being coordinated this week; flyer attachments have been included with this email. Each precinct has designated a location for food donation deliveries. In the 6th Precinct, Axis Church will be receiving donations to be distributed to families in need. Their Axis Café (address also on attached publications) is located at 2884 Route 112, Medford. Officers will be present during the drop off times this Friday, May 1 from 10am-1pm. We will assist with removing donations from your vehicle and maintain social distancing protocol. Please feel free to share the attached flyers with others.

Secondly, below you will see information shared from Deputy Police Commissioner Risco Mention-Lewis. She has provided important links pertaining to child care grants for essential workers. Please share this information with your fellow community members.

Kind Regards & Wishing each of you good health,

-Will Zieman

The Governor announced that New York State will provide child care scholarships to all essential workers starting Monday, April 20. Essential workers include first responders such as health care providers, pharmaceutical staff, law enforcement, firefighters, food delivery workers, grocery store employees and others who are needed to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We previously worked to clarify that United Way and 211 employees working in response to the pandemic are, in fact, essential.

Child care costs will be covered with $30 million in federal CARES Act funding to essential staff whose income is less than 300 percent of the federal poverty level – or $78,600 for a family of four – and will be paid up to market rate for each region statewide.

Essential workers can use the funding to pay for their existing care arrangement. If an essential worker needs child care, they can contact their local child care resource and referral agency (https://ocfs.ny.gov/main/childcare/referralagencies.asp) (CCRR) to find openings. The New York State Office of Children and Family Services will administer the program.

Learn more or fill out an application here (https://ocfs.ny.gov/main/news/article.php?idx=2119) .
Like many of the other sources, funds are limited and will likely run out fast. Encourage your qualifying employees to apply!

Message from Rep. Lee Zeldin

April 29, 2020 by Jennie

The fight against coronavirus is unlike any battle our county, state and country have ever faced. Our entire way of life flipped on its head seemingly overnight because of a pandemic that swept the globe. That’s why it’s critical we rise to meet this challenge not as Republicans, not as Democrats, but as Americans in a non-partisan manner to deliver for those who need it most.
Working with the White House and Suffolk County Executive, in just the last month alone, I’ve secured over 1.2 million pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Suffolk, including surgical masks, N95s masks, face coverings, gowns, and more.
In addition to desperately needed PPE, Suffolk County received $257 million in federal funding for coronavirus related expenses . As one of the country’s hotspots, this will go a long way in alleviating costs for local government, but there’s more we can do to drive desperately needed funding to our communities.
Going forward, we must continue to secure additional funding for local governments, which is why I secured expanded federal financing assistance for Suffolk County and am urging the federal government to pick up 100% of the tab for FEMA Disaster Aid.
For our local small businesses that have been greatly impacted by the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus, the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program funding has been replenished. These programs are about survival for these mom and pop shops, and we must ensure the businesses that need it most are receiving the help they need.
As we emerge from this outbreak of coronavirus stronger than ever, diagnostic testing, anti-body testing, treatment research and vaccine development continue to ramp up. One local example is Chembio Diagnostics, a US company based in Hauppauge,  that received approval under FDA’s emergency authority for a 15-minute rapid result antibody test. As they focus on widespread production, these tests are being used at Stony Brook University for a clinical trial that will help determine the effectiveness of using the plasma of recovered coronavirus patients in treating current coronavirus patients.
There are now four drive-thru testing sites in our Congressional District. To request an appointment, please see the information below:
Riverhead Drive-Thru Testing Site
To make an appointment, call 845-553-8030.
Stony Brook Drive-Thru Testing Site
To make an appointment, call 1-888-364-3065.
ProHEALTH in Riverhead Drive-Thru Testing Site
To make an appointment, call 516-874-0411.
Coram Drive-Thru Testing Site

NYS Coronavirus Update: A Powerful Letter from Kansas — Absentee Ballot Applications Will Be Mailed Out — New Resources for Domestic Violence Victims

April 28, 2020 by Jennie

letter
Letter from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
A crisis shows us both the best and worst in people, but more often than not, you see the best. I was moved by a letter sent to me by a retired farmer in northeast Kansas. His wife has health problems and they are both in their seventies. Enclosed with the letter, he sent one of five N95 masks he has from his farming days and asked me to pass on to a doctor or nurse in New York.
This is a true snapshot of humanity and a selfless and generous act. I want to share the letter with you so that you will be as inspired as I was. Read it below:
letter
Here’s what else you need to know:
1. Registered voters will automatically receive absentee ballot applications for the upcoming June 23 elections. No one should have to choose between their health and their civic duty. To that end, I am issuing an Executive Order mandating that the NYS Board of Elections automatically mail all registered voters postage-paid applications for an absentee ballot. This follows an earlier order allowing all New Yorkers to vote absentee in the June 23rd primary election. (In-person polling will still be an option.)
2. NYS launched a new texting program and confidential service to help New Yorkers experiencing domestic violence. Unfortunately, there has been a rise in domestic violence reports during this pandemic. Abuse victims are often closely watched by their abuser, making these tools needed. We want you to know: You are not alone and you do not have to stay in a dangerous situation. We will help you. Text 844-997-2121 or visit www.opdv.ny.gov to confidentially chat with a professional at any time of day or night.
3. New York State and Hip Hop Public Health have partnered together to remind you to wash your hands for “20 Seconds or More.” In collaboration with DJ Doug E. Fresh and a crew of hip hop legends, Hip Hop Public Health has created a fun educational video teaching New Yorkers how to stay safe and stop the spread of Coronavirus. Watch the video here and learn more about the campaign here.
4. New COVID-19 hospitalizations remain mostly flat. Yesterday, there were 1,296 new COVID hospitalizations in the state, down slightly from 1,359 the day before. Unfortunately, these numbers remain stubbornly high and are a good reminder why we must keep taking precautions. Total hospitalizations fell yesterday to 14,258, from 15,021 the day before. Tragically, there were 422 COVID-19 fatalities yesterday, down from 438 the previous day.
5. In Syracuse, dairy organizations have donated nearly 8,000 gallons of milk. The Dairy Farmers of America and American Dairy Association Northeast teamed up to donate milk to schools, senior care homes and others in need.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Tomorrow at 1 p.m., the Animal Medical Center, a non-profit animal hospital in Manhattan, will host a “Kitten Cam” on their Facebook page, featuring two newborn kittens, Jesse and Jaime.
If you were forwarded this email, you can subscribe to New York State’s Coronavirus Updates here.
Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

NYS Coronavirus Update: New Contact Tracing Program Launched – Financial Relief for Hospitals

April 23, 2020 by Jennie

Total Hospitalizations

Message from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo:

We are living in a profound moment in history. Our actions today will shape our future and we cannot risk undoing all the progress we have made. We will rely on science and facts to guide our next steps. I know there are some people who want to reopen as quickly as possible. I also want to return to normal. But there are too many lives at risk. We need to act prudently today or else we’ll suffer the consequences tomorrow.

Total Hospitalizations

Chart of the Day: Total hospitalizations have fallen but are still high. That’s one of many reasons we must keep on taking precautions to keep this virus from spreading.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. Today, I announced a new nation-leading COVID-19 contact tracing program to control the rate of infection of the virus. This program will help us control the infection rate of Coronavirus and will be executed in coordination with New Jersey and Connecticut. It will serve as an important resource to gather data and be a model to replicate across the country. Bloomberg Philanthropies is committing $10.5 million, along with organizational support and technical assistance, to help build and execute this new program, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health will build an online curriculum and training program for contact tracers. This program will be crucial as we start our work to safely reopen our economy. I thank former Mayor Michael Bloomberg for this exciting partnership.
2. While New York is on PAUSE, families of public employees won’t need to wait to access retirement benefits. A recently signed Executive Order waives the 15-day waiting period. This allows families who may lose a relative to Coronavirus to receive these benefits sooner.
3. The New York State Department of Financial Services announced new measures to help hospitals. DFS will direct health insurers to provide financial and administrative relief to New York State hospitals in response to COVID-19. Health insurers will be required to immediately pay out claims to hospitals and to work with the neediest hospitals to provide additional financial assistance. That means hospitals can focus more on life-saving medical care.
4. The NY National Guard Civil Support Team is helping test medical workers for COVID-19. The 22 Soldiers and Airmen on the team are trained to detect the presence of biological, chemical and radiological hazards using a sophisticated mobile laboratory. They have adapted this technology to run COVID-19 tests, and are now testing on-site medical workers stationed at the Javits Center, which has been used as an overflow facility for COVID patients.
5. The Port Authority of NY and NJ helped find a good home for over 30,000 pineapples. When a NYC food distributor received a shipment of thousands of pineapples from Costa Rica, they worked with the Port Authority to donate the pineapples to New Yorkers in need. They are just one of many food distributors that are giving away excess food product to food pantries, houses of worship and community groups. More donations are expected — of not just pineapples, but bananas, rice, tomatoes, apples, oranges and more.
6. The State’s antibody testing survey results will be announced in a few days. Earlier this week, New York began administering the survey in supermarkets and other locations statewide. The results of the random testing will show us for the first time what percentage of the population has actually had the virus and will help us to reopen and rebuild without jeopardizing what we’ve already accomplished.
7. Today is the 50th Earth Day. Protecting our planet and environment isn’t just a lofty goal — it’s a public health necessity. We have found that neighborhoods with high concentrations of COVID cases are also locations with polluting plants. The quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink impacts all of our health.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: To celebrate Earth Day, I Love NY shared iconic New York State views. Here’s Joshua Myers’ photograph of the Adirondack Mountains:

1.       On March 20, 2020 Governor Cuomo issued an Executive Order to halt evictions and foreclosures for 90 days.  Suffolk County is asking anyone who is experiencing a foreclosure or eviction to report their mortgage company to 311.  They are tracking which companies are not in compliance.  (See attached EO 202.8)

2.       Health and Welfare Council of Long Island is helping people navigate the NYS open health insurance exchange.  The exchange has been reopened until May 15.  Please see the attached flyer for more details.

3.       Umbrella, a grocery delivery company, is offering essential item delivery during this crisis.  They are waiving their membership fee and are asking for a $10 *suggested* donation.  They are also looking for volunteers to help with their efforts.  You can sign up for deliveries (or volunteer) at www.askumbrella.com or call 516-882-4498.  If you have any questions, you can also email emma@askumbrella.com.    They are currently up to a 5 day waiting period, which is significantly shorter than 2-4 weeks by PeaPod, Instacart, Shipt, etc.
