A special ribbon cutting ceremony
took place to celebrate the opening of the new Fire Island National Seashore Patchogue Ferry Terminal, then all enjoyed the 1st Annual Art Contest & Exhibition presented by the Friends of Fire Island.

The new 4.6 million terminal building is reminiscent of the historic workshop of famed boat builder Gil Smith. It sits prominently along the Patchogue River. Since 1980, a terminal at this site has provided seasonal ferry boat access to Watch Hill, on Fire Island. The new terminal building, with its multipurpose room and additional restrooms, will be able to accommodate larger groups for programs and ferry tours to Watch Hill. Rotating exhibits are also planned for this facility.

The front of the building displays a map of all the National Park Service South Shore of Long Island properties on the main land and Fire Island National Seashore. Girl Scouts presented the colors for the Pledge of Allegiance and were on hand to discuss a native plant garden they are preparing at the terminal.
